Relationship Issues

Introduction

The stress and negative emotions resulting from conflictual romantic partnerships can affect you in many ways, including suffering from academic problems, participating in risky sexual behaviour, and being affected by partner violence.

Relationship counselling, also known as couples counselling or couples therapy, is a type of psychotherapy that focuses on helping people improve their romantic relationships. By working with a therapist, couples can explore issues in their relationship, work on their communication, improve interactions, and resolve conflicts. While relationship counselling is often used to address problems, it can be helpful at any stage of a relationship. People in healthy, happy relationships can still benefit from counselling that strengthens their communication and connection.

You can be rest assured that at Skooc, you and your family are in good hands.

Symptoms

Relationship therapy should begin as soon as the problems get in the way of your daily life. Here are some signs that you might benefit from a consultation:

  • You have trouble expressing your feelings to one another

  • You have one or more unsolvable disagreement

  • There is withdrawal, criticism, or contempt in your interactions

  • A stressful event has shaken your daily life

  • You have trouble making decisions together

  • You have experienced infidelity, addiction, or abuse

  • You want a stronger relationship

If you notice recurring instances of a few of these symptoms, we at Skooc recommend a formal evaluation.

Diagnosis

At Skooc, we help you better understand what you are going through. For proper treatment, it’s recommended that a psychologist or psychiatrist perform a psychological evaluation. The mental health professional will ask you questions about your behaviour and mood. Relationship dissatisfaction must be prevalent n during the past month, as evidenced by any of the following:

  • Pervasive sense of unhappiness with the relationship

  • Thoughts of divorce/separation that are more than transitory

  • Perceived need for professional help for the relationship

Next Steps and Intervention

Our team of professional psychologists at Skooc can help you by providing the necessary interventions. The first few sessions will focus on your history and the problems you are there to solve. Be prepared to answer questions about your relationship, your parents, your childhood, and your relationship experiences before your current one. Your therapist will possibly want to spend some time talking to everyone together and to each member separately.

The way your therapy is going to go depends on the style of your counsellor and the therapeutic approach they use.

  • Emotionally-focused therapy – EFT is based on attachment theory and aims to foster healthy interdependency between members of the couple or family

  • Imago therapy – This form of therapy combines spiritual and behavioural techniques with Western psychological methodologies in order to assist couples in unveiling their unconscious components.

  • Gottman method – This aims to disarm conflicting verbal communication; increase intimacy, respect, and affection; remove barriers that create a feeling of stagnancy, and create a heightened sense of empathy and understanding within the context of the relationship.
